Annual Well-woman Exams

What Happens During a Well-woman Exam?

The purpose of an annual /wellness exam is to screen asymptomatic individuals for gynecological conditions and cancers. Your Advanced Practice Provider specializes in reviewing your medical history (both past and present illnesses or diagnosis), past surgeries, current medications, your sexual health, pregnancy history, and family medical history. You will have screening health indicators completed such as a blood pressure and height/weight (Body Mass Index). Depending on your age and risk factors a physical exam will be performed.

Annual Well-woman Exams

Your yearly well-woman examination is an important opportunity for you to engage with your healthcare provider about your overall well-being. It’s an appointed time dedicated for you to address any existing health queries or concerns you might have with your Advanced Practice Provider.

Medical Screenings

It is recommended to do both anxiety and depression screenings at least once annually. This is a series of questions you would answer during check in. Depending on your results, the provider will review this with you and see if any referrals or treatment is necessary.

Based on your personal and/or family medical history you may qualify for INHERITED CANCER SCREENING. This is a simple blood test that screens for syndromes known as hereditary cancers to determine an individual’s risk of developing these cancers.

If you qualify, Arizona Gynecology Consultants uses Myriad Genetics Labs for this screening. Learn More about Myriad Genetics Labs

A physical examination is then completed with a thyroid, breast, and internal pelvic examination. Not every annual examination will need a pelvic examination, your provider will review with you specifically if that is needed. A PAP screening may need to be completed depending on your age, health history and if you are having any symptoms. We offer all our sexually active patients sexually transmission disease screening. This includes a serum blood test, pelvic exam (cultures), OR urine test. A mammogram may need to be ordered depending on your age, personal and family medical history, and if you are having any symptoms. Fasting blood work may or may not be needed depending on your personal and family history and if you are having any symptoms. Depending on your age and what symptoms you are having, we may recommend serum hormonal testing.

Potential Additional Costs

Depending on your insurance plan, there may be additional costs for blood work, to work up problems (symptoms you are experiencing) with your annual exam, or cultures. We recommend you contact your insurance plan in advance to see what is covered under your annual exam or what may have additional charges.
